CHRISTmas Mini Series: How To Opt Out Of Consumerism

This Christmas season, we’re taking time to focus on what truly matters—keeping Christ at the heart of it all. We're sharing simple and meaningful ways to bring Him into our celebrations, helping us remember the true reason for this season. We pray that each idea inspires you and fills your Christmas with the love, peace, and presence of Christ.

“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
— Matthew 6:21

So often, this sacred season is overshadowed by the pressure to do more, buy more, and have more. The world’s noise tells us to measure the season’s success by what we give and receive materially. Yet, we know that’s not where the beauty of Christmas is found.

We don’t have to say yes to the frenzy.

We can choose to focus on Christ and the true gifts He offers. When we do, we discover that Christmas can be simpler and infinitely richer.

Here are six ways to step away from consumerism and into the heart of Christmas:

1. Reflect Before You Purchase

Take a moment to ask yourself, “Why am I buying this?” Is it out of love or obligation? Out of thoughtfulness or because of a sale? True joy doesn’t come from the quantity of gifts but from the intention behind them. A simple, thoughtful gift can speak volumes.

2. Give from the Heart

Instead of focusing on what you can acquire, consider what you can give. A warm meal to a neighbor, your time to a friend, or resources to someone in need—these acts of generosity bring light to the season and remind us of Christ’s selfless love.

3. Prioritize Presence Over Presents

The people in your life want you. Your love, attention, and presence are gifts no store can sell. Moments like reading a favorite Christmas story together or sharing a family prayer leave lasting imprints on hearts.

4. Revisit Your Traditions

Which traditions bring joy, and which feel like obligations? Focus on the ones that bring you closer to Christ and loved ones. It’s okay to let go of anything that adds unnecessary stress or expense.

5. Rethink Gift-Giving

Not every gift has to come wrapped with a bow. A handwritten note, a shared walk, or even a kind word can be the most meaningful of all. The gifts that touch hearts don’t always carry a price tag.

6. Sit in Silence

In the stillness, we find clarity. Take time each day to step away from the noise and remember the heart of Christmas: a Savior born into the humblest of circumstances to bring light and eternal life to the world. In His simplicity, we find abundant joy.

This Christmas, let’s turn our hearts toward what truly matters.

Less hustle, more peace.

Less excess, more love.

Less consumerism, more Christ.
